NOTES TO CONSIDER WHEN PRINTING ON DARK FABRIC:
A silk screen 鈥渨hite flash layer鈥, also known as an underbase, is a layer of white ink applied to a dark garment and briefly dried with a flash cure unit. This provides a bright, opaque foundation for other colors to be printed on top, ensuring the final colors appear vibrant and accurate rather than being dulled by the dark fabric. If you plan to order a dark material, your vendor may already be planning this step to produce your order.
WHY A WHITE FLASH LAYER IS NECESSARY
Vibrant colors: On dark-colored fabrics, wet inks can appear dull and muted if printed directly. A flash-cured white underbase prevents the top color from mixing with the dark fabric, creating a solid base for the intended color.
Ink-saving for white prints: For designs that are all white, the "print-flash-print" technique is used to achieve a bright, opaque white. A single pass of white ink on a dark garment often looks thin and faded, but applying a second layer over a flashed base results in a more vibrant finish.
Prevents ink bleeding and smudging: The brief flash-curing process partially dries the ink, making the surface tack-free. This "gels" the ink, locking it in place and allowing subsequent layers to be printed without smudging or causing misalignment.
Improves color accuracy: Without a stable base, each printed color would interact with the dark fabric differently. The white layer creates a neutral, uniform surface, so the final colors are consistent and true to the design.
Enhances specialty inks: Specialty inks like puff or metallic need a partial cure between layers to achieve the desired texture or effect. A flashed underbase prepares the surface for these subsequent layers.
