At CSU Channel Islands, we recognize that pregnancy, childbirth, and related conditions, including nursing, are important aspects of who you are. You have the right to fully participate in all academic, extracurricular, and campus programs without discrimination or limitation. We also understand that being a pregnant student or a student who is nursing is an important facet of your identity, and we want you to be proudly visible on campus as both a parent and a student. The Title IX & Inclusion Office is available to assist you in obtaining the academic adjustments you may need each semester.

Yes, these situations are protected from discrimination under federal law & you have access to support & resources.

Some examples of academic adjustments are: Flexibility with attendance if medically necessary, extended deadlines when health or recovery requires it, make-up exams or alternative assignments, breaks during class to use the restroom or eat/drink, access to larger desks, chairs, or seating accommodations and excused absences for pregnancy-related needs when requested at the time of absence.
No, medical documentation is not necessary.
An 鈥渁djustment鈥 is provided up to one year post-delivery by the Title IX & Inclusion office and does not require medical documentation. An 鈥渁ccommodation鈥 is provided by Disability Accommodation and Support Services (DASS) at any time for medically necessary needs and requires medical documentation.

Yes. You must be allowed to continue participating in opportunities like internships, career rotations, and other off-campus elements of your program. Your professor cannot require a doctor鈥檚 note for continued participation unless your professor requires one or all students who have a medical condition that requires treatment by a doctor.
No, academic adjustments are only for the individual who is pregnant or who is experiencing a pregnancy-related condition.

Frequenty Asked Questions Regarding Nursing/Pumping

Yes, under federal law you are allowed a reasonable amount of time to nurse/pump during class time without penalty.

Some examples of academic adjustments are: Missing short intervals of class time to nurse/pump, being allowed to eat/drink during class time (unless in a lab environment), seating near the door, and the ability to make up work or assignments missed awhile away from the classroom.

In April 2024, the U.S. Department of Education released updated Title IX Regulations. Under these regulations, when any student or a person who has a legal right to act on behalf of the student, discloses pregnancy or a related condition to any employee, the employee must do the following:
