What is Prevention Education?

We all have the responsibility and the right to make our environment safer and more inclusive. Prevention Education proactively combats discrimination and harassment to create an inclusive environment. Our work is dedicated to supporting and empowering all dolphins through engaging workshops that enhance the skills of healthy relationships and creating a diverse community together, understanding bias, bystander intervention, and fostering inclusivity. For more information about prohibited conduct and affirmative consent:

• Affirmative Consent

  Affirmative Consent is an agreement to engage in sexual activity that is informed, affirmative, conscious, voluntary, and mutual. Affirmative Consent must be given freely and without coercion, force, threats, intimidation, or by taking advantage of another person鈥檚 incapacitation. A way to remember Affirmative Consent is to think of FRIES:

  F- Freely Given

  Consent is given without pressure, manipulation, or under significant influence of drugs or alcohol.

  R - Reversible

  Anyone can change their mind about what they feel like doing, anytime. Even if you鈥檝e done it before, and even if you鈥檙e both naked in bed.

  I - Informed

  You can only consent to something if you have the full story. For example, if someone says they鈥檒l use a condom and then they don鈥檛, there isn鈥檛 full consent.

  E - Enthusiastic

  When it comes to sex, you should only do stuff you WANT to do, not things that you feel you鈥檙e expected to do.

  S - Specific

  Saying yes to one thing (like going to the bedroom to make out) doesn鈥檛 mean you鈥檝e said yes to others (like having sex).

• Understanding Bias

  We all have the power to make a difference in our dolphin community. Here at CI, we encourage all members of our community to understand how bias works, and how it can impact those around us. It is important to take steps to acknowledge our biases and work to become more equitable and inclusive.

  Consider what unconscious biases you might have.

  Recognizing the unconscious biases you may have is the first step to un-doing them. Consider alternative perspectives and viewpoints, talking with trusted peers can help you uncover what your unconscious biases may be.

  Remain curious.

  If you鈥檙e unsure鈥攁sk. Taking the time to learn more about someone fosters better collaboration and opens the door to understanding their perspective. Curiosity expands our view of the world beyond our own experiences, helping us see through a wider lens and build stronger connections in our community.

  Intervene in concerning situations.

  When you see something, say something. Speaking out against violence, discrimination, harassment, and hate makes our campus better for everyone.

  Ask for help when you feel unsafe.

  If you are feeling unsafe or are uncomfortable personally intervening in a concerning situation, we are here to help. For immediate assistance dial 911, or call UPD at 805-437-8444. To report a bias incident or to learn more about resources, call Title IX & Inclusion at 805-437-2077.

  Stay up to date on campus policies.

  The CSU Non-discrimination policy ensures that every member of our campus community is free from any form of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. For questions about the policy, please reach out to Title IX & Inclusion at 805-437-2077.

• Bystander Intervention

  The California State University and the campuses provide training on safe and positive options that may be carried out by an individual or individuals to prevent harm or intervene when there is a risk of dating violence, domestic violence, sexual misconduct/sexual assault, sexual exploitation, or stalking. Bystander intervention includes recognizing situations of potential harm, understanding institutional structures and cultural conditions that facilitate violence, overcoming barriers to intervening, identifying safe and effective intervention options, and taking action to intervene. Information about bystander intervention is included in a variety of prevention, outreach, and awareness programs across the CSU.

  Bystander Education encourages employees and students to:

  • Notice the Event
  • Interpret the Event as a Problem
  • Assume Personal Responsibility
  • Learn How to Help
  • Step Up by utilizing the 鈥�4 Ds鈥�

  The 4 D's to Bystander Intervention:

  Direct

  Directly addressing the situation.

  Distract

  Making a simple (or elaborate) distraction to diffuse the situation.

  Delegate

  Finding someone else to address the concern.

  Delay

  Checking in with the person after to see if you can do anything to support them.

How to Get Involved
