Smith Decision-making Center September 14, 2010 Minutes Approval of the Agenda -Thank you to Bill Cordeiro for use of this venue. -Agenda approved. Approval of the Minutes of April 27, 2010 -Minutes approved Report from the President -The President reported the state budget had not been approved yet but we are hoping for some restoration money when it is approved so that we can continue to do great things with little resources. -The North Hall abatement and demolition will begin soon, the project is expected to take approximately 22 months to complete. -We have received a successful bid for the Entry Road construction project, the lowest of three bids is now being reviewed and we expect to have affirmation soon and that project is also expected to take approximately 22 months to complete. -The President and Joanne Coville are both working on the co-generation plant project which is currently costing the university $800,000 a year. -Dr. Kevin Volkan will be testifying tomorrow before the Senate judiciary committee about a bill that would ban the sale of crush videos showing animals being tortured. He is one of only two people being asked to testify, the bill is sponsored by Rep. Elton Gallegly. - Our self-study is due to WASC in 2012, we will be creating a sub-committee to work on the study which will be titled from aspiration to identity. We will need to begin discussions on our structure for Academic Affairs, the structure will need to remain fluid so we can continue to develop programs into the future. He welcomes a conversation about support from our programs in the next 5-7 years. Report from the Provost -Welcome back everyone, she looks forward to working with everyone again and having a lot of conversations about WASC, the cookies for Senate will be on her again. Report from the Senate Chair -Welcome to our first visiting scholar, , her areas of research include death and dying and Special Education. Please take advantage of her expertise and use her as a guest lecturer for the your classes. Report from Statewide Senators -The first meeting will be September 15th. A faculty trustee has yet to be appointed, acting Governor Maldonado signed a document freeing up money designated for the CSU. Consent Calendar: Academic Senate By-laws -Chair Hartung reviewed the recommended changes which would bring the By-laws up to date. There were grammar changes made such as changing Temporary faculty to Lecturer faculty and removing committees that no longer exist. First reading item: SP 10-01 Policy on Reassignment of Faculty -V. Adams will serve as the committee Chair for this academic year, this policy outlines a procedure by which faculty may be reassigned. -J. Grier asked for clarification on what the Chair of affected unit means? Does this reference the receiving or outgoing Chair? V. Adams responded that is referenced the outgoing Chair. R. Christopher said it should reference both units. -P. Rivera motioned to make the policy a first reading item, I. Grzegorczyk seconded. -C. Burriss inquired why a faculty member would choose to waive their seniority points? R. Christopher indicated that sometimes that may be the only way the receiving unit would take a faculty member. - I. Grzegorczyk inquired what happens to people with joint appointments? Can a faculty member be fired from one unit and not another? R. Christopher said that issue had not been put to the test yet. Reports from the Standing Committees Committee on Committees -N. Parmar reported they had their first meeting two weeks ago, she and C. Teranishi will serve as co-chairs for this academic year. Committee on Centers and Institutes -C. Teranishi and C. Cogan will serve as co-chairs for this academic year. Curriculum Committee -E. Tayag and P. Hampton will serve as co-chairs for this academic year, October 15th is the deadline for program modifications and October 4th is the deadline for new program submissions. Fiscal Policies -K. LaBonte will be serving as the Chair for this academic year. General Education -G. Buhl reported they would be meeting on September 15th and the deadline for new courses and course modifications is October 1st. Student Academic Policies and Procedures -G. Buhl reported they had met yesterday and do not yet officially have a Chair. Professional Leave Committee -S. Kelly will be chairing the committee for this academic year. They will be hosting two informational sessions in October for faculty interested in applying for sabbaticals. Call for volunteers -The deadline to respond to the call was September 10th, thank you to those who responded, we have forwarded the submissions to the Presidents office, he will be making the appointments. The submissions for the CI Master Plan committees have been forwarded to Deborah Wylie, she will be making the appointments for those committees. There were a number of names submitted to serve on the Deans search committee, the Senate Executive Committee will be reviewing the candidates and anyone volunteering to sit on the committee or applying for the position will not be involved in the selection process. Reports from Other Committees/Centers on Campus Centers for International Affairs -A. Jimenez-Jimenez informed everyone of the international opportunities available for faculty via the Chancellors Office as Resident Directors in China, France, Italy, Japan and Spain for the 2012-2013 academic year. The position includes a 10% salary increase, please see Antonio for additional information. There is also a $10,000 scholarship available for research on any topic in China, he is chairing the selection committee for this scholarship. Center for Community Engagement -A. Grove invited everyone to the celebration for Constitution Day this coming Friday, there will be a marching band starting at 4:15 p.m. They have submitted an application to the Carnegie Foundation and the Chancellors Office is offering a webinar on service learning grants, please contact her for additional information on any of these topics. Center for Integrative Studies -B. Monsma reported that he and K. Leonard had submitted a grant focused on Interdisciplinary Research. They have received a $300,000 grant to develop lower division interdisciplinary courses. Please send him information about what you are doing if it relates to interdisciplinary teaching, the Provost would like the same information, please send her a copy.
