Motion approved unanimously. Approval of the Minutes of March 16, 2010 -m/s, I. Grzegorzyck, G. Buhl, minutes approved. Intent to Raise Questions -In response to V. Adams question about the bushes along University Drive: Deborah Wylie responded: This really should be a direct request from faculty/staff to OPC (x8461 or HYPERLINK "mailto:OPCworkcenter@csuci.edu" OPCworkcenter@csuci.edu) and not an academic senate issue. That said, work was completed 4/3/10. -In response to J. Elliotts question about the Sodexho employees: Dave Nirenberg responded: The Sodexho employees will have the opportunity to apply for positions with University Glen Corporation. The UGC operating philosophy is to maximize student employment. At the Student Union food facilities we have 2 managers and approximately 45 students to operate the facilities. The residential dining program will require a larger number of management and full time staff because of the nature of the business. We expect that most of that staff will come from current Sodexho employees. -In response to A. Groves question about security in Sage Hall: John Reid responded: He will contact Dr. Grove to address her specific concerns. Report from the President -The President reported he did not have any new budget news; he expects there will be more information after June. -He shared the good news that our students are continuously being accepted to some of the best schools and doctoral programs, nation-wide, which means that reviewers recognize that our students are receiving quality undergraduate instruction. -The President read aloud from a letter he received from the very proud parents of one of our Art program graduates. They are very thankful for the great college experience their daughter had while here. In the letter, the parents commented they were also parents of a UC graduate, a private college graduate and they still regularly recommend Channel Islands to friends and relatives. -The University has entered into exciting new partnerships with Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara and Santa Barbara City College. Other accomplishments include our first Goldwater Scholar and a $900,000 partnership with CSU Monterey Bay and CSU Humboldt. -We have been awarded the Hispanic Serving Institution designation which will allow us to apply for federal funding. -The National Board meeting of the Campus Compact will be here in October 2010, giving us another opportunity to be visible at a national level. -CI has been approached with the possibility of hosting one of the gubernatorial debates here, but nothing is finalized yet. If it comes to be, this would put us on the map in yet another way. -Construction updates include: North Hall and the new entry way on which work should begin in August. -The President distributed an article entitled A Call to Action from OpenEd Tech 2009, which discusses ways to deliver forward looking content via a forward thinking delivery system. We are going to have some serious conversations about how we deliver education in a flexible way. He requested everyone think this summer about our future. What does this university need to look like? We need to look at our delivery system and figure out how we can lead rather than wait for others to define our future for us. Report from the Provost -The Provost informed everyone that a production crew would be on campus April 26-30, trying to capture the essence of campus life to create a ViewBook.a brief, in-depth view of student life and the campus. Some faculty have already volunteered to help with this, and others will be asked to participate. -Discover CI is scheduled for this weekend, April 10th. We have 700 students admitted, and with their families well be hosting about 2000 people. Please contact Jane Sweetland if your program is not already listed as a participant. -The Chancellors Office is requiring us to manage up and down with respect to enrollment targets. Initially the message was not to surpass a given number, now the message is not to go under it. Its a management challenge. -The Provost requested that a point person always be identified for functions that take place in the Broome Library, so that librarians dont get put in the position of trying to answer questions and manage things they dont know about. -Were now delving into exploring a new hiring category, of a soft money research person. The question is, how do we have people on campus who are completely soft-money funded, but also ensure that they abide by policies of our campus? -She requested that if you buy a table at a community event, please let the Advancement office know. -Regarding car rentals for field trips: When you rent a car you end up carrying that on your credit card, often incurring interest by the time you are reimbursed. Now there is a mode by which you can direct bill rental cars to the University so that doesnt occur. More information will be coming to you about how this can be done. The Provost thanked Joanne Coville for helping her to make this possible. Buhl made a friendly recommendation to substitute the second sentence, seconded by G. Wood. -A. J. Bieszczad recommended adding another amendment to the policy. -C. Wyels suggested that his amendment did not need to be included in the policy but he could instead add his requirements to the program curriculum as it is developed. -G.
