Adams Approval of the Minutes of May 6, 2008 -m/s/a, Francois, Hoffman Intent to Raise Questions -T. Itkonen asked: Could I please get the name and phone extension of the person in student services who is in charge of providing services/accommodations to non-traditional post baccalaureate and graduate evening students? -C. Burriss asked what measures were being taken to deal with the mosquito epidemic. -J. Grier asked about the process for updating emergency contact information? R. Christopher responded that Human Resources has a process which begins by an employee filling out an Employee Data Change form. -A. Denton asked how many trees have been removed during construction and what are the plans to replace them? -N. Parmar asked about the campus watering system and what could be done to avoid wasting water? -S. Anderson asked about the possibility of putting a signal light at the Potrero Road exit which is very dangerous. Report from the Provost -Provost Neuman reported on her first two months, stating that she has enjoyed her time here and hopes to continue to do her best. -She is working closely with our Advancement Office in an effort to obtain additional resources for the university. -The Provosts Council will be hosting and event titled A Conversation with the Campus where she would like to describe who we are and where we are going. -A main focus is the need to find a way to integrate the Strategic Plans from the system, campus and division together. -She announced Maureen McQuestion had left the campus, they have met with the senior leadership team and IT hopes to continue to provide seamless services to the campus community. Report from the Academic Senate Chair -Chair Hartung reported she has been familiarizing herself with Roberts Rules of order. She stressed that she would like to abide by the 20 minute rule this year, the rule says that anyone can speak only twice to each motion for no more than 5 minutes each time. She added that the Statewide Senate enforces that senators must have read the materials prior to speaking to a motion and she would appreciate it if Senators come to the meetings prepared here as well. Hopefully adhering to these rules will help us get through the business of the day quickly. Information item: Policy on Intellectual Property -The Senate Executive Committee had to act on this policy and extend the dates due to the original policy having sunsetted. Report from Standing Committees Senate Executive Committee -No Report. Committee on Centers -C. Burriss announced that she and Nitika Parmar would be co-chairs for this year. -There will be two informational meetings, focused on the centers, scheduled on September 30th and November 14th. Committee on Committees -M. Furmanski reported the committee had been meeting and have already held several elections to fill seats for standing Senate committees. They welcomed the Lecturer Representatives for this year; Tom Schmidhauser and John Griffin. Curriculum Committee -A. Grove and M. Adler are co-chairing the committee this year. They are already busy with proposals and program modifications, please submit requests early to both Curriculum and General Education Committee. The deadline to submit items is November 6th, please use the revised forms on the Curriculum website. Faculty Affairs Committee -B. Gillespie and B. Bleicher will be co-chairing for a second year. They are currently discussing the Student Ratings pilot form and the deadline for that is October 1st. If you would like to volunteer your courses to be evaluated, please do so ASAP. They are also reviewing the Sabbatical policy. Fiscal Policies Committee -No Report. General Education Committee -P. Rivera will serve as Chair of the committee for the Fall 2008 semester only as he will be going on sabbatical in the Spring. This year the committee will be working with both the Center for Integrative and Interdisciplinary Studies as well as the General Education task force. The Committee is also looking at developing student related policies. -P. Rivera reported that he and Billy Wagner are the Statewide Senate representatives for the campus. They attended a meeting recently were several main topics of discussion included; remedial Math and English, reports about research scholarship and creative writing scholarships, and Assembly Bill 2296. -Chair Hartung requested that everyone stand up when they speak. Student Academic Polices and Procedures -G. Buhl will serve as Chair for this year. Their yearlong focus this year is to improve graduate policies. Faculty Development Advisory Committee -G. Wood reported that J. Peters would be the chair this year and Sean Anderson would be the chair presumptive. G. Wood pointed out that our Senate Bylaws stipulate that Senators will not be able to speak for more than five minutes total. University Planning and Coordinating Council -B. Cordeiro reported on the committees charge, background and makeup. Last year they updated the Strategic plan. The focus this year will be on providing priorities in these tough budget times and the four strategic initiatives. Center for International Affairs -A. Jimnez-Jimnez reported that we currently have 13 Channel Islands students studying abroad. We also have 12 international students on our campus this year. Currently the international students matriculate through Extended Education but we hope to have them matriculate on the state side soon. A focus for this year will be to recruit students from the local community colleges. -September 15th was the deadline to submit a proposal for a University 392 course for Summer 2009. Please remember that the deadline to apply for IRA funding is coming up soon. -We have recently been approved, by Homeland Security, to issue J1 visas which is a good thing for the University. Thank you to Beth Hartung and Mayumi Kowta for all their work on this issue. Announcements -Alexandra Mitchell was introduced as our student representative for this year. -G. Berg announced that our MS Biotech degree received an award for the best degree in the United States. -D. Wakelee informed everyone that Jack OConnell, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, will be speaking on campus Monday, September 29, 2008. -C. Burriss invited everyone see our visiting artist in residence, Jos Torres Tama. He will be doing various lectures and performances this week. -C. Delaney- Rivera informed everyone that February would be the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin and she is planning a Darwin Day celebration, please contact her if youd like to participate. -L.
