Intent to raise questions Responses to previous questions Q.-I. Grzegorczyk expressed concern about the recent failure of servers and loss of data. Can the current procedure for backing up data be run at least once a week? Can we install ghost? A.-per Maureen McQuestion, CIO,- IT had been running weekly data backups. The backups failed. Therefore, during the month of November, IT replaced the old data backup system with a new data backup system. Data is fully backed up weekly, with daily incremental backups. In addition, we are designing a second data center in a second location to which we will send a second, replicated backup. We hope to have this safeguard in place by end of June. IT regrets the loss of data and believes the new tape backup system will prevent any future catastrophic loss of user data. Ghost is not a viable option because it only works with drives that are mirrored. Catalina in its old form was a RAID 5 set which did not lend itself to imaging technology. Catalina is no longer in operation. The services are now on a server running virtualization software called VMware. The virtualization technology combined with our new backup system provides more reliability than Ghost. When we add the second data center, the data will be even more secure and restoration time greatly reduced. Q.-B. Adams would like to know if it is legal for the University to rent space to religious schools like the Carden Academy? A.-per Caroline Doll- If/when the campus is leasing out surplus space, all prospective lessees must be treated equally and offered basically the same lease terms in effect at the time the agreement is negotiated. Religion is not an issue and it could be considered discriminatory if we didnt lease out space to an otherwise suitable lessee because they were religiously affiliated. Q.-J. Peters would like to know what can be done to reduce the increasing amount of spam in our email? A.-Judy Swanson, Manager - IT User Support Services, sent out an email detailing the use of the new Spam filter program being implemented on campus. We are pleased to announce that the IronPort Spam Filter is going live this weekend! Once every 24 hours, IronPort delivers an automatic email to your mailbox that contains a link to a web page where you will find a list of the email IronPort believes to be spam. The IronPort web page allows you full control over how your email is handled. If you want to opt out of the spam filter, contact the Help Desk and the IronPort administrator will put your account on the do not filter list. Q.-J. Elliott would like to know why the price for groceries at Sodexho is twice as much as a grocery store what is the progress on having a grocery store in the Town Center ? Their architect has submitted blueprints to the various agencies required to review them and we hope to have approved plans in December 2007. Regarding the friendly amendment to the academic master plan to move implementation of the MFA degree to 2010, I would like to state the following.
