Call to order -2:38 p.m. Approval of Agenda -m/s-approved Approval of the Minutes from the last (Oct. 2) Senate meeting -m/s- J. Elliott asked that his name be added to the attendees at the meeting. -minutes approved as amended. Intent to raise questions -K. LaBonte would like to know how faculty input and teaching mission will be incorporated into the planning process for the recently acquired parcel of land. -A.J. Bieszczad would like to know what the emergency plans are in case of fire. -T. Itkonen would like to know if the Transportation and Parking electric carts can shuttle University Glen residents to their homes at night. Report from the Provost -Provost Lucas thanked Dean Vaidya for being a strong advocate on behalf of the faculty. Dean Vaidya recently negotiated a distribution rate whereby Academic Affairs will receive 55% of our overhead rate, 42% will go to Finance and Administration and 3% will go to IT. -Lucas encouraged everyone to volunteer for the GE task force. -The Navy has donated a super computer to our campus. This computer is worth $1 million and weighs 1 ton. Joanne Coville, V.P. of Finance and Administration, will be heading up the group that will decide where the computer is to be housed. -We will be offering a new course this Spring--University 498. This course will allow students to work with a faculty member and help them with their scholarly research and activities while working closely with and learning from the faculty member. Report from the Chair -Senate Chair Ballman attended the Statewide Chairs meeting in San Francisco on October 4th. She noted that morale was better at some of the other campuses, particularly those, that have had a recent change in upper administration. CSU workload will be discussed at the next meeting. Reports from Senate Standing and Other Committees Senate Executive -Thank you to the numerous colleagues who have volunteered to serve on the various committees and boards. Committee on Centers and Institutes -M. Correia reported that the committee is exploring different ways to increase the presence of centers around campus, they are also updating their bylaws. Committee on Committees -J. Baln reported the committee is currently assessing how we will vote. They are looking at using other possible voting mechanisms. Curriculum Committee -B. Cordeiro reported that the committee meets every Wednesday in Sage Hall and are updating their website. -Reminder: Tuesday, November 6th is the deadline for submitting course modifications. Faculty Affairs -B. Gillespie reported that the committee is working on revising the RTP policy and will be forwarding it to the Senate for a vote later this year. They have a policy on Unit Bylaws on the Agenda for today. Fiscal Policies -No Report. General Education -A. Denton reported that the last day to submit courses for GE approval is Tuesday, November 6th. Student Academic Policies -A. Denton reported that the Commencement policy is on the agenda for today and they are working on an auditing policy and invite input. Technology Advisory Committee -A. J. Bieszczad reported that the committee meets every two weeks on Wednesdays. He wondered why the committee had not been informed about the super computer before today? They are currently reviewing the software request and installation process; if you have any comments about either, please direct them to the committee. -They have approved four computer configurations to be offered via the refresh program. -They are working on creating a campus hardware and software legend that can be accessed online. -The email server is now accessible from home. -Reminder that the H drive is available for you to save your documents and it is backed up on a daily basis. -Remote file storage for students has been cancelled because it did not satisfy accessibility standards, in doing so, we have cut off access to 99% of students. -They are also continuing to explore ways of conducting evaluations of on-line courses. Presidents Scholars Program -D. Muraoka reported on the program and distributed information. We currently have eight scholars. Two of the scholars were in attendance; Jennifer Bonsangue, Math major from Orange County and Kristen Perez, Liberal Studies major, from Bakersfield. The Scholarship is awarded based on academics; the applicants must have a high GPA and SAT score. Applicants are then interviewed by a large committee who makes the decisions. -The scholarship pays for a students tuition for up to four years; in addition, they are provided a laptop as well as a $600 book credit. -The program is currently housed in the Presidents and Advancement offices but will be moving to Academic Affairs. An advisory board will be created, please contact D. Muraoka if you are interested in serving on the board. Other -C. Wyels requested feedback on the University 498 course proposal. Cordeiro asked if we would need to create Bylaws from scratch. R. Christopher responded that she had been asked by the Senate Executive Committee to provide model templates. -G. Wood asked what defined a unit. B. Gillespie responded saying it could either be a program or department and would replace whatever mechanisms currently exist for electing a chair. SP 07-05 Commencement Policy -m/s- V. Adams, B. de Oca. A. Denton spoke to the policy saying it defined which students could participate in the Commencement ceremonies. Currently students can have up to 10 additional units to complete and still participate in the Commencement ceremonies. -T. Itkonen would like to see specific language regarding graduate students. -J. Baln asked if there were numbers of how many of the students that currently graduate in the Fall, still come back to participate in the Spring ceremony. -V. Adams stated that he believed if students were not completely done with their coursework, then they should not be allowed to participate in the ceremony. He believes the integrity of the ceremony needs to be maintained so that graduation is more meaningful. -C. Wyels reminded everyone that grades are not processed until after the ceremony and if faculty has a student who needs additional time, they can always issue an Incomplete. -A. Denton reminded everyone that the policy also allows for students to finish over the summer. -S. Saunders said she did some research into the situation and found that most students, at other campuses, who need additional time to complete courses, usually finish in the summer. Students at Channel Islands delay until the Fall because we do not offer summer courses here. -T. Itkonen believes the decision concerning commencement for graduate students should be left up to their advising faculty members. -B. de Oca stated that the current policy does not allow for anyone to march in the ceremony in the spring. Announcements -B. Cordeiro announced that there will be an encore performance of the Love Betrayal and Death concert featuring Jesse Elliott on piano, Tiina Itkonen mezzo soprano and Liz King flute will be free to the campus community and be held on Wednesday, November 7th, at 6:30 p.m., sponsored by the Martin V. Smith School of Business & Economics. -A. Morris announced the Cycling Dolphins finished in 12th place in the competition out of 75 competitors and raised over $7000. Congratulations to the group! -A. Grove invited everyone to listen to retired Army Colonel and peace activist Ann Wright speak on campus on Monday November 5, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. in Malibu Hall 100. -A. Virgil encouraged everyone to attend the interviews and brown bag for the candidates for AVP for Faculty Affairs. Interviews will be held on Tuesday, 11/6, and Friday, 11/9. -D. Hoffman requested faculty volunteers willing to lend fact about their identity for a scavenger hunt the Library is sponsoring.
