Intent to raise questions In response to last weeks questions: -In the calendar, why is it that the number of instructional days varies by semester? -Faculty Affairs stated the semesters are mostly consistent in the number of teaching days however Holidays may sometimes create a two day difference. -Are there plans to fix or improve the lighting between campus and University Glen? -Debrorah Wylie, AVP Operations, Planning and Construction, said there are no plans to add additional lighting on Chapel Hill. New questions -C. Wang-When will we be changing to a Representative Senate? -A. Bieszczad-Several emails from her students have gone straight to the junk mail folder. Can this be fixed so that it does not happen in the future? -C. Wyels- May we get an update on the work that was in progress during F'06 to create a policy allowing 91Ƶ employees shower privileges in the gym? (i.e. without buying a gym membership... The policy is needed for those who wish to commute via human power or exercise outdoors before or during their work day). Report from the Provost -Lucas thanked the office of Faculty Affairs for the excellent job they did with coordinating the faculty interviews last month. Offers to candidates will be made over the course of the next few weeks. -The WASC team will be on campus next week. It is very important for the WASC team to go away with the conviction that we have addressed the concerns in their last report and also that we are using student learning outcomes and doing program assessment. We want them to know that we have a good plan in place for assessing the baccalaureate degrees as well. The center directors will work with program chairs to develop one question that will help assess the baccalaureate program. They also need to know that there is a center for assessment and our Chief Assessment Officer is Harley Baker. The actual vote to accredit us will not take place until June at which time they will decide the number of years we will be granted accreditation. Report from the Chair The following statement was made with the wholehearted support of the Senate Exective Committee: On February 6, 2007 the 91Ƶ Academic Senate endorsed the statewide Academic Senate resolution on The Importance of Settling the Contract Between the CSU and CFA. The CSU Academic Senate recognizes that it is neither the role nor the responsibility of the Academic Senate to participate in contract or collective bargaining between the California Faculty Association and the California State University; but that it is, however, the role of the Academic Senate to advocate for actions and policies that produce a quality educational environment. We at Channel Islands endorsed this resolution and by so doing, the sentiment expressed in the statement. As faculty in the CSU we face the possibility of faculty job actions, of a strike. Here at Cal State Channel Islands we pride ourselves on our positive, collegial culture of civility and respect. This is a culture we value highly, and one of which we should be extremely proud. As a faculty, we have a responsibility to preserve this culture. And we must do so most especially when we differ on issues and courses of action.
