Call to order -2:39 p.m. Approval of Agenda -unanimous approval Approval of the Minutes from the last Senate Meeting (October 17) -approved with one abstention Intent to raise questions -In response to J. Elliotts question about restructuring the Agenda: -Senate Exec. discussed the idea at length and decided that everything is equally important and if we proceed in a timely manner, hopefully, we can get through the entire agenda. New questions -Milburn would like to know if there is a policy for recording campus events and archiving them. -A.J. Bieszczad, would like to know if there are plans to build tennis courts in the near future? He would also like to know if we can use the existing bowling alley? -Itkonen requests cordless microphones for the next Senate meeting. -Itkonen would like to know what support services Student Affairs offers for evening students? Report from Provost Provost Lucas reported the following: -The CSU will be revisiting the Cornerstones project from 10 years ago. The Chancellors Office has requested that each campus has several discussions and develop specific questions and outcomes. -Lucas thanked everyone for submitting the WASC documents on time. -A group of 10 faculty and administrators has been meeting to discuss what is currently known as the Renaissance College. This college will offer new and innovative way of learning for a cohort of students that will work mainly with a small group of faculty. Anybody who is interested in participating in the development of this college is welcome to participate. Report from the Chair -Chair Ballman reported on her attendance at the Statewide Senate Chairs meeting where several campuses discussed the problems they were facing due to not meeting their target enrollments. Some of the other issues discussed were workload issues, salary equity, and retention of faculty, revision of RTP documents and revisions of Student Evaluation Form. Reports from Senate Standing and Other Committees Senate Executive -No Report Committee on Centers -Will be meeting on Friday, 11/3/06 Committee on Committees -No Report Curriculum Committee -They currently have 73 items on the agenda and are meeting twice a week. Faculty Affairs -They are working on revisions to the RTP document. Fiscal Policies -They have met with both the Provost and the Dean and have devised procedures for reviewing the budget for this year. The proposed procedures have been submitted to the Provost for approval. General Education -They have submitted the Learning Outcomes for review Strategic and Tactical Planning -No Report Student Academic Policies and Procedures -Have forwarded policies for Senate Exec. Review Office of Research and Sponsored Programs Advisory Committee -They are working on developing new Intellectual Property policies which are necessary for the Indirect Cost Rate. 91Ƶ Assessment Council -Muraoka informed everyone about the council, indicating it was cross-divisional and it reports to the President about assessment activities taking place on campus. Other -Adler informed everyone that a call would be going out for participants for the mini-grant review committee. Old Business SP 06-03 Center for Civic Engagement and Service Learning (CESL) -Balen reported that she had received a lot of input since the last meeting. She spoke to several faculty in person regarding the proposal and she clarified that the Provost would still be the person overseeing all the committees. -Cordeiro stated that he had philosophical concerns about the proposal and that it should be clear that Academic Affairs was responsible for all academic based centers. -Stratton quoted from SP 04-25 stating that he was concerned that this center was not being proposed to serve faculty as originally indicated but was instead being proposed to support other areas. -Milburn expressed her concern as a new faculty member that is that is has been difficult for her to find the information she needed to place students and create courses in service learning environment. She expressed support for the creation of the center. -B. Adams expressed concern about the poorly managed structure of the proposed center, while recognizing the need for the center. -Hartung agreed that the center was needed but informally had offered a suggestion that would put one faculty director in charge. -Grzegorczyk asked if any changes had been made to the proposal since the last Senate meeting, Balen clarified that no changes had been made since. Vote on policy: Yes: 14 No: 25 Abstain: 2 Policy fails SP 06-04 Changes to Schedule Template -minor changes have been made to the policy to help with uniformity -There was discussion about the template not being compatible with Education courses which need to begin at 4:30 p.m. because most students work until 4:00 p.m. Wakelee responded that there were three classrooms already dedicated to Education courses on campus and additional space at the UPA. -Wyles proposed a friend amendment to the policy that would help with scheduling Education courses. The amendment was accepted. Vote on policy: Yes: 37 No: 0 Abstain: 1 Policy passes New Business SP 06-05 B.A. Communication -m/s-Cordeiro commends Trudy Milburn for doing an excellent job of putting this program together and the Curriculum committee recommends approving it. -Christopher recommended some grammar changes. SP 06-06 General Education Learning Goals and Outcomes -m/s-Wood, Bleicher. These outcomes were created by a group of faculty which worked on it over the summer based on a recommendation from WASC. Announcements -Wyels invited everyone to participate in the full moon hike on Sunday, 11/5.
