Muraoka asked to add a report from the Statewide Academic Senate. -m/s-Christopher, Wood-approved with one abstention Approval of the Minutes from the last (March 14) Senate meeting. Minutes are attached. -unanimous approval Intent to raise questions -Deborah Wiley, AVP of Operations Plant and Construction, was on hand to answer questions raised at previous Senate meetings: -in response to the questions raised about recycling on-campus: if you would like larger paper recycling bins in the copy rooms, and you have room for it, please call Raudel Banuelos and he will bring one over. -We work with a vendor that sorts and weighs our trash and recycles whatever is recyclable. For the 2005 year, we have 89% waste diversion which is a high percentage. Wiley distributed plate samples which are completely digestible, made of tapioca, and will also aid in the recycling effort. -in response to the questions raised about leaf blowing, there are only 7 groundskeepers for the entire 200 acres, their schedules are from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. so they must do the leaf blowing within that time frame. There was discussion about possible alternate schedules or solutions but Wiley responded they were not feasible due to the limited personnel. Another factor that poses a problem at this campus in particular are the old, unsealed, windows throughout the Bell Tower which allow noise to enter the building. -Anderson inquired as to the cost of replacing the old windows throughout the building with new double paned windows. Wiley estimated the cost would be approximately $3000 a window and there are currently no funds designated for that purpose. -Frisch reiterates that the problem is a big one, students and faculty cannot hear one another and something has to be done about it. Wiley offers that faculty can call the OPC front desk at ext. 8960, indicate their location, and ask to have the noise in that particular area stopped temporarily. -in response to the question about what makes us green: it is our re-use of existing buildings, recycling efforts and our promotion of energy efficiency. There was discussion about the possibility of installing air conditioning throughout the buildings or the more efficient forced air. -In response to the question about Negotiated Cost Rates, the President is convening a task force to address the matter. New Questions -Barajas would like to know if the University has an Affirmative Action officer? If so, who is it and can they offer training? -Peters would like to know why flyers are not allowed to be posted in the Bell Tower lobby. Who made this decision and when? -Wyels would like to know if it is possible to provide shower space for men/women who want to use alternative methods of getting to work. -Anderson would like to know if the mirror located at the end of the hallway in BTW can be switched to the other side to be able to see folks walking up from behind a car driving through the area. Report from the Provost -Faculty hiring is still going on. We hope to know by the end of this semester the amount of faculty positions we will be able to fill next year. -You are all invited to participate in the Student Research Competition which is scheduled to be held on our campus the weekend of May 5th and 6th. We still need additional judges for the competition, please forward any recommendations you may have to Renny Christopher. The judges cannot be employed by any CSU and Masters degrees are preferred. Report from the Chair -No report from the Chair. -Muraoka reported on his recent Statewide Senate Meeting indicating there were 18 pieces of policy on the Agenda. He briefly reviewed the constitutional amendment which is on the Agenda for later today. The background is that in 2001 the Senate agreed to expand its size and did so without any addition to the budget which is now causing problems. He briefly reviewed the issues being caused by the lack of funding. Report from WASC -Muraoka is still awaiting a draft of their report. The Education Effectiveness report is next and he has already begun work on that. Consent Agenda, SP05-18. Change the name of Center for Integrative Studies (from Center for Integrative and Interdisciplinary Studies). -Hampton motions to move this item to a first reading item. Reports from Senate Standing & Advisory Committee and Campus Committees and Boards: Senate Executive -Ballman reminded everyone that there are only 3 more Senate meetings left in the semester. -The Representative Task force will be holding a brown bag tomorrow. -The SETEs task force will have a brown bag on April 4th. Committee on Centers -No Report Committee on Committees -The deadline for nomination of Senate officers is this Friday, March 31. A call will be going out for nominations for the senator to the Academic Senate of the CSU. Curriculum Committee -No Report Faculty Affairs -No Report Fiscal Policies -They have presented Provost Lucas with the proposed budget General Education -No Report Strategic and Tactical Planning -No Report Faculty Development Advisory -Fall mini-grant applications are due to be reviewed, 7 reviewers are needed from people who have not applied for a mini-grant. -feedback is requested from applicants with mini-grant applications that were denied. -30 out of 60 faculty responded to the faculty survey, most responded they enjoyed working here, however, there were several responses that indicated we are creating a culture of overwork in which service to the university makes scholarship difficult. -Anderson inquired how we compared to other campuses? Hampton responded that we have a lot more money for re-assigned time here than at most other campuses due to strong administration support. There is a desire to create a center for faculty development. Campus Reading Celebration Task Force -Christopher informed everyone that the task force selected TC Boyles Tortilla Curtain for the 2006-07 school year. TC Boyle will be here on November 14th, 2006. We are very lucky to have him here, the Foundation will purchase books for students.
