Report from the Provost -Lucas thanked everyone for their help and participation throughout the year on the various committees and task forces that were formed. -An AVP has been selected, his name is Dr. Philip McGough. He has accepted the position offer and will begin working here on August 1st. -Final candidates for the Deans position have been forwarded to Lucas and the President and they are now checking references. Report from the Chair -Answer to previously raised questions: -In response to the question about how commencement speakers were chosen. The President currently accepts recommendations from everyone, Peggy Hinz suggested Jack OConnell due to his involvement with the campus. Parking issues also played a role in this years decision. -In response to the policy on students using key protected labs on weekends. Chief Young indicated that he would be reluctant to allow students into the labs without proper supervision and authorization. Bill Kupfer agreed that allowing students into restricted areas would present hazards and may create a problem with crime as well. -Regarding the possible plans to allow students to live in the UGlen apartments. Dr. Greg Sawyer has reported that it is no longer a consideration. Report from the Joint Task Force on the Curriculum Plan -Data has been collected and a report is being compiled which will include information on the costs of implementing new programs. A draft of the report will be circulated in approximately two weeks. Reports from Senate Standing & Advisory Committees Senate Executive -A review has been done on the status and progress of task forces this year. The task force on a Representative Senate cannot go forward until the Structure task force finishes their work. The SETE task force has decided that the SETE needs to be done away with but they need to explore other evaluation/assessment methods that might work as substitute programs. Committee for Centers and Institutes -Report by Ashish Vaidya regarding the CIA/ACIP program: The ACIP program has accepted 630 applications for the study abroad program, three of those applications were from Channel Islands students. The falling dollar is becoming a problem for students choosing to go abroad. Three new sites are being created in Africa. Vaidya requests that faculty promote the program to their students in their classes. -The Center for International Affairs has created a resource packet for faculty who are interested in teaching University 392 abroad. They will be working on ways to promote the center throughout next year and will be assessing how our students are achieving an international perspective here on campus. -Adler reported that the Osher foundation has been awarded a second year of grants and will be eligible for a million dollar grant if they can enroll 300 students. Committee on Committees -Reminds everyone that the voting deadline is this Friday, May13. Faculty Affairs -The General Personnel Standards is now in the hands of the RTP committee. General Education -Are presenting the General Education Course Review policy today. Strategic and Tactical Planning -They have incorporated the comments received as a result of the draft and have forwarded a final draft to the Provost. Elections of Senate Officers -Peter Smith conducted the Senate Officer elections. Senate Chair nominees: Renny Christopher vote results: 17 Terry Ballman vote results: 22 Vice Chair nominees: Virgil Adams vote results: 25 Bill Adams vote results: 14 Secretary: Scott Frisch ran unopposed. -Elliott made a motion to suspend the portion of the by-laws that requires committee elections to be carried out in the Spring except for the Committee on Committee elections. There was much discussion regarding the pros and cons of holding elections in the spring vs. holding them in the fall. SP 04-36 Disqualification Policy (SAPP) Second Reading -voice vote taken, passed unanimously. SP 04-37 Reinstatement Policy (SAPP) Second Reading -de Oca reviewed revisions that were made based on comments received at the last meeting. Voice vote taken, passed unanimously. SP 04-38 Honor Code (SAPP) Second Reading -Aloisio reviewed the revisions made to the policy since the last meeting. Vote results: Yes: 19 No: 16 Abstain: 4 Policy passed. SP 04-40 Minor in Sociology (Curriculum) Second Reading -voice vote taken, passed unanimously. SP 04-42 CI Alzheimers Institute (C for Centers) Second Reading -Hampton submitted friendly amendments based on feedback he received at the last meeting. -voice vote taken, passed unanimously. SP 04-43 RTP Policy Revision (FAC) Second Reading -There was discussion regarding the definition/responsibility of a mentoring faculty. Vote results: Yes: 23 No: 14 Policy passed. SP 04-44 RTP Policy Revision (FAC) Second Reading -There was discussion regarding how this policy would be implemented and which program each faculty member would be evaluated under.
