Other selected assigned Ethics articles downloadable from University Blackboard. COURSE DESCRIPTION, LEARNING OBJECTIVES AND OUTLINE The prerequisite for this course must be met (if any). This course provides discussions of ethical issues and societal challenges derived from scientific research and professional activities. This class further examines the sources, fundamental principles, and applications of ethical behavior; the relationship between personal ethics and social responsibility of organizations; and the stakeholder management concept. Students will analyze ethical principles of different types of science/technology, and other business and professional groups. Topics also include integrity of scientific research and literature and responsibilities of business to society, ethical practices in professional fields, ethical dilemmas in using animal or human subjects in experimentation, gene manipulation, genetic engineering, affirmative action and ethical issues of applying biotechnology in various fields. Case projects will require students to research and explore ethical issues and disclose their findings both orally and in written format. This class consists of twice weekly one hour and fifteen minute lectures and discussions. INSTRUCTIONAL METHOD, OBJECTIVES The course will consist of classroom lectures and discussions. Active student participation will be expected of each student. Case problems and open forum discussions are designed to stimulate and improve the students analytical skills and conceptual abilities in the area of ethical theory and practice. This course is fast moving and assumes the student will maintain assigned reading. Absolutely no recording devices permitted. Please turn off all cell phones and pagers while in class (discuss consequences). GRADING, EXAMINIATIONS AND CASE STUDIES There are two exams in the class, one mid-term and a final. Examinations may consist of true/false, multiple-choice and essay questions. The exams cover the text and lectures and may require outside research. Students will be assigned a class project involving an ethical issue. Each student shall (1) individually research this assignment, (2) write a paper with a body of a minimum of five pages and a maximum of seven pages, excluding cover page and non-text pages, (3) orally present an argument (pro or con) about the topic in class. Cases must follow the following format: Title page, a one page executive summary stating your position and overview of your paper, supporting text and foot notes at the base of each page of text as appropriate. No more than three outside sources for quotations are permitted. All quoted material shall be italicized. The majority of the text shall be in your own words and remember this class is an ethics class and you should liberally provide reference to the subject of ethics and morals. Use a 12 point font type and no fancy covers necessary. Papers not conforming to this format will not be accepted and/or graded down appropriately. WRITTEN PROJECT ASSIGNMENT: The paper will be graded on the following 5 elements and will not be returned. If you are uncertain of your writing skills by all means utilize the writing lab for assistance. Proof read your project before submitting. CLEARLY STATE YOUR POSITION (Are you pro or con on the subject?). Provide your position and a brief analysis in your executive summary page. Apply concepts and discussions from class and incorporate them into your topic, and develop a position that you can support. What is it that you will prove? Material will be developed in your own words and not copied (other than permissible footnotes, copied text is not permitted. Italicize/bold ALL copied material utilized in your text and this should not exceed more than 5% of your papers context). USE THE TEXTBOOK(S) and Handouts. Focus on applying specific concepts from the text and handouts to support your position. The purpose of this section is to make a connection between conceptual or theoretical material in the text and real situations as discussed in class. In this section, you should introduce specific concepts, principles, theories, conceptual frameworks, or ideas derived from the text and lectures and apply them to issues of professional or personal ethics raised in your project. ADDITIONAL REASEARCH (e.g., periodicals, books, newspapers, Internet) is required on the case topic. Additional information must include both (1) background information not found in the text (2) updated information on the case as current as possible. MAKE SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS or points that will better support your project topic in the future (e.g., one approach is to assess the case as though it were carried on the headlines of a major newspaper). It is also very important that you include footnotes indicating your sources of information, however not rely on more than three sources for quoting purposes. As a general rule, the more sources you read, the more information, ideas, and views you can incorporate in your written analysis. Use a variety of sources including books, the Internet, scholarly or professional journals, mass circulation magazines, and newspapers to develop your thoughts. For added value go beyond reliance on popular magazines and newspapers. The project will also be graded on basic elements of good style including grammar, spelling, double spacing, numbering pages, and using a proper footnote format. Print text on one side only. Tables of contents, and fancy folders or binders are NOT necessary. Refer to the Appendix on page 186 of your text for writing guidance. Class projects are due on date noted in syllabus and late papers will receive a 10% penalty each week they are late and will not be accepted after being two weeks late. ORAL CLASS PRESENTATION should be as follows: Before speaking 1) write your name on the board, (2) introduce yourself, and (3) give a phrase or single sentence that clearly summarizes your position relative to your topic. Each person will then speak uninterrupted for FIVE MINUTES. Five minutes is the maximum length of time you can speak, therefore, plan your presentation carefully. You will be given a 30-second warning towards the end of your presentation and then stop you at the five-minute mark. PLAN TO HAVE YOUR CONCLUDING COMMENTS READY AT THIS POINT. Plan your time carefully (I strongly suggest that you rehearse this presentation several times with others). YOU WILL LOSE ONE GRADE FOR EVERY 30 SECONDS THAT YOU FINISH TOO EARLY. STUDENTS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO USE NOTES WHILE MAKING PRESENTATIONS. In this five-minute presentation, I expect the student to present a lively convincing delivery focused on the central issue(s) dealing with the ethical issue covered in your written project. Do not give an informational lecture. No matter how well you do it, this is not the assignment. Provide a presentation BASED ON PRINCIPLES AND YOUR RESEARCH, YOUR PRESENTATION MUST ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTION: WHAT MESSAGE AM I TRYING TO CONVEY? DO NOT READ YOUR PRESENTATION OR EXPECT TO RELY ON NOTES, NOTES OF ANY KIND ARE NOT PERMITTED! Prepare yourself to speak extemporaneously. Remember that good speakers make considerable eye contact with their audience. Speak clearly and loudly enough so that the person furthest away can hear you. Important: Since this assignment is intended to simulate an executive activity, you may wish to dress as if you were going to a job interview. After the presentations, there may be an informal question-and-answer session with the class in which everyone is invited to ask questions or express their views. Course Grades: Final grades will be determined by cumulative achievement on the following items: Midterm 50 points Class Participation 25 points Class Project (Presentation and Paper, 25 points each) 50 points Final Exam 50 points You must bring your student identification card or your drivers license and a scantron answer sheet to each examination. You will not be given an exam if you fail to present this identification, absolutely no exceptions. No provision is made for the make-up of exams; I feel it is not fair to the students who take them when scheduled. However, I may allow a make-up if a student can demonstrate that attendance was impossible. This must be properly documented and prior approval is required. In no case will a student be allowed to take more than one make-up per course. It should be mentioned that the only available date to take an approved make-up is during one of the last three meetings of the class. This date must be pre-approved by the instructor. YOU MUST TAKE YOUR FINAL EXAM AT THE DATE AND TIME DESIGNATED FOR THIS CLASS! ABSOLUTELY NO EXCEPTIONS, PLEASE DO NOT EVEN ASK. Academic Dishonesty. The Business Program requires that students engaging in academic dishonesty receive a grade of F. In addition, Department policy requires that all individuals engaging in academic dishonesty be reported to the Vice President, Student Affairs. Academic dishonesty takes place whenever a student attempts to take credit for work that is not his/her own or violates test-taking rules. Examples of academic dishonesty during test taking include; looking at the work of other students, passing answers among student(s) or using unauthorized notes. When students sitting next to each other have identical answers, or have made the same mistakes, this is an indication of academic dishonesty. Examples of academic dishonesty on out-of-class projects include submitting the work of others or quoting directly from published material without referencing the source. If you have any questions about the proper use of outside sources, consult with your professor. While course grades may be affected by a class curve, the following scale should serve as an approximate guide: 90% - 100% A 80% - 89% B 70% - 79% C 60% - 69% D 0% - 60% F Class Participation: The grade for class participation is based on the subjective assessment of the instructor. Components of this grade are attendance (including being on time) and the entire range of behaviors, which affect and contribute to class sessions. This grade will be on a subjective 4-point scale. Participation is considered contributions students make on their own without being called upon by the instructor. In addition, Participation scores are influenced by homework submitted by students. Computers are not permitted in class for taking notes unless required to as a result of a confirmed disability. The matrix below will serve as a primary guide to grading ALL written materials submitted as part of the requirements for this course: Grade Range:Quality of WritingQuality of AnalysisA-BWell written from beginning to end; the ideas are well organized and there are smooth transitions throughout the report. A pleasure to read.Excellent analysis and integration throughout the report.B-CGenerally good, but with a few grammatical and syntactical errors scattered throughout the report.Good analysis with good integration throughout the report.C-DQuality is inconsistent; some portions of the report are well written, others are poor. There is some analysis but the analysis contains inconsistencies.D-BelowPoorly structured, with numerous grammatical and syntactical errors throughout the report.Little or no analysis and flecked with inconsistent statements throughout the report.
