Prerequisite of this class is ACCT 220 (Managerial Accounting), MATH 140 (Calculus for Business Applications) or MATH 150. FIN 300 introduces students to theories and practices of principles of planning, procuring, and controlling short-term and long-term financial resources of business organizations. Topics include Time Value of Money, capital budgeting, debt and equity markets, security evaluations, cost and structure of capital. FIN 300 is a critical element of business education. It gives student a big picture of how financial decisions are made and how they are integrated with other business arena. Make sure the one you have is able to calculate Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR). The TI BAII is supported by the textbook. I will also illustrate the use of financial functions of TI 83 (TI 85 and TI 89 are similar) and Microsoft Excel if needed. Exams include multiple choices, problem solving, and short essays. No Make-up Examination will be given. If you miss one of the exams, you have a choice to take a cumulative make-up exam during the final examination week. The exams will be closed-book and based on assigned readings, lectures, and homework problems. Quizzes Students are required to read assigned chapters before a lecture and review them and do assigned homework after. I will give weekly quizzes to check your progress. There is no make-up opportunity for missing quizzes under any circumstances. There will be total 12 quizzes given. However, you may choose to drop two of the quizzes. The scores of total 10 out of the 12 quizzes will be weighted toward your final course grades. Case Analysis Case analyses are designed to help students make connections between textbook theories and real business applications, and to build collaboration and communication skills. Students will be formed of groups by the instructor. Each group is required to analyze finance cases using theories and tools you learned in this class, and to present your analyses via written reports. There are total two cases. Details will be given during the course. Homework Students are expected to review each text assignment after the lecture and to answer specific questions and problems pertaining to the chapter. Homework assignments and answers will be posted on blackboard. The distribution is such that A: 16%, B & C: 68%, D & F: 16%. Plus/minus will be given. The probability distribution is assumed to be normally distributed.
